January is always a busy month at Kids Win Missouri with the New Year and kick-off of legislative session. Here’s a look at our work in the Capitol and around the state.

Governor Mike Parson addresses early childhood advocates and stakeholders.

In Jefferson City

  • On January 15, Governor Mike Parson gave his State of the State address and laid out his budget priorities to the General Assembly. We were excited to hear some of the Governor’s plan to support Missouri children and families this year. Check out our blog on the key toplines and takeaways here.
  • On January 28, the state celebrated the end of the first Preschool Development Grant and kicked off the planning for the implementation of PDG 2. Craig attended on behalf of Kids Win Missouri joining partners and the Governor to assist the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education as they begin planning for carrying out the grant. The $33.5 million grant will support system development and enhancement of the state’s early childhood system over the next three years.

Around the State

  • On Friday, January 24, Casey facilitated a community roundtable discussion to hear from home visitors, health providers, and community partners in Kennett, Missouri, in partnership with the Dunklin County Health Department Breastfeeding Taskforce. The group discussed child care access and quality, support for child care professionals, access to Medicaid and other state benefits.
  • On Monday, January 27, Craig spent the day with Missy Riley learning about the early childhood and home visiting systems in Springfield Public Schools and the broader Springfield community. Craig also presented a brief early childhood legislative update at the Southwest Early Childhood Collaborative in Nixa.
