Alumni Spotlight – Rachel was a member of cohort 1 of our ECE Fellowship and has remained involved in statewide advocacy!

Rachel Allison is a powerhouse in the early childhood advocacy world. As a child care provider in Rolla, Missouri and a member of our very first ECE Fellowship cohort, she’s continued to advocate fiercely for children, families, and providers over the years. Rachel plays a key role in our Alumni group and has been instrumental in helping others find their voice and learn how to advocate for themselves and their communities. What did you learn from your experience as a fellow with KWM?

This fellowship reminded me that legislators are people—real humans who care deeply about their communities and want to listen. Advocacy isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about showing up, building relationships, and speaking up for what matters.

I discovered the power of connection—how relationships and networking with others who share a passion for children and families can spark real change. Most importantly, I learned that I don’t have to be an expert to make a difference. I am a voice for my community, and I can use that voice to stand up for Missouri’s kids, families, and providers.

I’m not alone—and that’s what makes this work powerful.

What, if any, advocacy have you done since becoming a member of the Alumni Network? Or what do you plan to do?

I’ve been involved in KWM’s Community Planning initiative for Phelps County.  I’ve also tried to help make local connections and spread the word about the work being done to fight for Medicare in Missouri. I’ve helped lead regional groups during Child Advocacy Day. I’ve definitely got the advocacy bug!

Share something exciting that has happened or you expect to happen during this last/next year? Can be personal or professional.

I was awarded Missouri Early Childhood Professional Administrator of the Year by MOAEYC!

What is your favorite memory of your time in the fellowship?

Definitely Joe G’s karaoke. STAR! ⭐️

What is something you have gained from being part of the Alumni Network?

Being part of the Advocacy Alumni Network means staying connected to a powerful community of people who care deeply about kids and families. It’s a reminder that advocacy doesn’t end with one fellowship—it grows stronger with every shared story, every collective effort, and every new connection.

I’ve gained ongoing support, inspiration, and a sense of belonging in a network committed to making Missouri a better place for children.
