Crystal is a mom from Grandview, Missouri. Through working with the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) in Kansas City, Crystal has found her voice as a leader in her community. She has put that voice to amazing use by joining our ECE Leader Fellowship and not only advocating for the needs of her own family but also encouraging and inspiring others to do the same. Get to know Crystal below!

How did you become an advocate for early childhood education?

I started with advocating for my child who has special needs. I did my own research and came across PLTI to help me better navigate on how to best advocate for my child. I also was an educator and wanted to help families navigate on how to better navigate for their children. I now work elsewhere and still utilize what I have learned to help the families I work with.

Why do you think it’s important to be an advocate as a parent?

I think it is important because we know our children best and we can be the voice they need to get the services they need to succeed.

Why should Missouri invest more in child care and early education?

I think they should invest more because our children will not be children forever. We owe it to them to invest in them so they can better navigate the world as they get older.

In one sentence, what does the ideal child care and early education system look like for Missouri families?

The ideal child care and early education system for families would be one that is affordable but also one that is inclusive.

What is one thing you’ve learned about advocacy that you’d like to share with others?

One thing I have learned is that advocacy is not one size fits all. There are many avenues and it takes everyone to work together to get things accomplished.
