How did you become an advocate for early childhood education?

I’m the executive director of Bartlett Center, a nonprofit organization that has a childcare, preschool, and youth program, as well as community outreach services. I’m also the current president of the St. Joseph School District Board of Education, so with all that I do, the importance of early childhood education has become very prevalent.

Why do you think it’s important to be an advocate as a provider?

Anything you begin to do early will lead to more success in the future. It’s been proven that the earlier a child is given the chance to begin their educational journey, they will have a more successful future. Why not start our children out with the best chances they could have?

Why should Missouri invest more in child care and early education?

Missouri should invest more in child care and early education because it’s the right thing to do to ensure our children are prepared for the best life possible.

In one sentence, what does the ideal child care and early education system look like for Missouri families?

The ideal child care and early education system for Missouri families is offering quality child care that is attainable and affordable.

What is one thing you’ve learned about advocacy that you’d like to share with others?

One thing I’ve learned about advocacy is that the legislators do actually listen! It takes time, but it’s worth it.
