How did you become an advocate for early childhood education?

I’ve had to be an advocate for kids my entire adulthood, both my own and for the kids I have been blessed to serve professionally, but I would never have considered myself an advocate until I became involved with Kids Win Missouri. From my first zoom call I felt connected, empowered, educated and inspired and my journey advocating for kids and families has really felt legitimized and purposeful since that point.

Why do you think it’s important to be an advocate as a provider?

“If not me then who?” I think every provider in the country would acknowledge that there are serious issues facing both the profession and families. It is the responsibility of every single one of us to step up and make things better. I also feel a personal responsibility to utilize the skills and training I’ve received as a fellow to be a voice for those who can’t.

Why should Missouri invest more in child care and early education?

Because we’re smart. Investing in early care and education affects economic growth, physical and mental health, and provides better long-term outcomes for kids. All the statistics and research and data prove that it’s a smart investment. Let’s make smart investments.

In one sentence, what does the ideal child care and early education system look like for Missouri families?

An ideal early education system would make sure all providers and all families have the support and resources that they need for success.

What is one thing you’ve learned about advocacy that you’d like to share with others?

You can do it. It’s as simple as that.
